What do we do?Raising money for cancer research and equipment is one of the core goals of Big C. Of the £14m raised by the charity since its foundation in 1980, a large portion has been devoted to funding important research carried out at the University of East Anglia and local hospitals.
Thanks to this funding, local medical staff and research scientists are working on new ways to diagnose and treat a range of cancers. Continuing this essential research into cancer identification and treatment requires constant investment, and there are always a range of important projects in need of funding.
'Funding from The Big C has meant that vital research relating to cancer has been possible here in Norfolk. With the continuing help of this essential local charity, we aim to be a centre of excellence in this field'
- Professor Dylan Edwards, School of Biological Sciences, University of East Anglia
In addition Big C has opened a Family Cancer Information and Support Centre at the Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital. This important facility provides vital access to information and support services for families affected by cancer across the region.
From 2009 the Trustees of Big C are offering student bursaries to enable students to gain experience in scientific research or support a medical elective period. The purpose of the awards is to encourage students at local higher education establishments to consider a career/research associated with cancer.
